If you want your 2020 economic impact payment transferred to your bank account through direct deposit, the IRS said you need to provide your banking information using the Get My Payment portal by noon ET on Wednesday, May 13. After the Wednesday deadline, the IRS will focus on sending the outstanding coronavirus relief paper checks up to $1,200 through the mail.
By the start of May, the IRS said it had made 130 million payments to US residents who meet the requirements for a check -- both through direct deposit and in the mail -- and intends to deliver the remaining payments through June. Direct deposit is more convenient and secure than receiving a check in the mail, according to US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin. Because of high demand on IRS.gov, you may need to wait until it's your turn to access the tool. If you get an error message, see the next section.
